4-H Mentoring

Over the last semester I decided to work with the 4-H mentoring program here in Cedar City. The 4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization.

The four H’s of the 4-H stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.

Through this project I was able to make a difference in the lives of two young boys. They were able to learn the importance of having a structured program that prepared them to do well in school.
This is a picture that one of my boys had to paint
for a class. I can't say I was a ton of help but was
proud how well he did.

Completing this program I was able to learn that even though I am only one volunteer in about 540,000, it helped the two students that I did work with.

It was not an easy undertaking, to be assigned to boys who had such a great need of support to better prepare them for school and society.
This is us being funny. The hardhat
 is for privacy
After going through the project I came to the realization that no matter your home life or your social interactions, with a little help and mentoring young students can succeed.

When I first started meeting with them I had a hard time getting them to feel comfortable around me, and I in turn felt slightly uncomfortable. As we got to know each other better, we all grew more comfortable                                                   with one another.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! This year we started out with a bang. Literally.
For Christmas this year Mitch's brother in law, Cade, got him something called Tannerite. If you know anything about Mitch, you'll know he couldn't wait very long to try it. And if you know anything about the rest of us, you'll know we all just had to be there.

This video was taken from about 200 yards away through a spotting scope - Mitch's other Christmas present from his amazing wife, Kassie! They put the tannerite in an old tv of ours, one of the huge ones that weigh like a million pounds and stick out in the back like 10 feet. Seriously. 10. Anyway, watch for yourself.

Don't you just love that giggle?! It was only fitting that Mitch be the one to shoot it and oh man did he shoot it. There was nothing left!!!

It's been a good year so far.
We added tons to our food storage which is definitely a good thing. Gotta love case lot sales.

We also tried out our new game Jenga. I think Andrew beat me every single time...

And Andrew turned into Mr. Betty Crocker over her and made homemade butter! We had some cream that was going to go bad so he decided to make butter out of it.

I must admit I was slightly surprised that it actually turned out! It really truly tastes like butter you buy from the store! Way to go honey! All he did was use the beaters and mix it for forever. And then a little longer. Then you put it into a cheese cloth or something similar and squeeze all the buttermilk out. And you get butter! It was way easy and a good way to use the cream so it didn't go to waste.

Andrew has started school back up so he's busy again, but with a new work schedule things aren't quite as bad as they were last semester. He's doing well in his classes and is on track to graduate in May!

And I am so excited because for our anniversary this year we are going to Portland!!! Andrew surprised me last night when he said we had to plan something. We found airplane tickets and condo for a killer deal! I can't wait! Andrew has wanted to go back and visit his mission for a long time and I am so dang excited!! Wahoo!

Anywho, Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas!

I LOVE Christmas! I love the presents and the decorations and the lights. But mostly I love spending so much time with friends and family. We were able to head up to Salt Lake to see Andrew's family for Christmas a couple weeks before Christmas. We had so much fun. Andrew's sister, KellyAnn was in town from North Carolina! The last time I saw her was on our wedding day, almost two years ago. It was great to see her and her new baby Lexi!

When I say new I really mean 8 months old, new. But she is new to us! She is such a cutie!

This was the only picture I remembered to snap. But we got to play with Seja, Seth, Carter, and Keenan as well. It was so much fun watching them open the presents everyone bought. They loved every minute of it.
We also went to the temple and did sealings and that was a blast. It was an amazing feeling to be there with most (someone had to watch the kids) of Andrew's family. I really can't wait to go back up and see them.

We also had some friends over for a Christmas party a few nights ago. Again, me being a slacker, I only  managed to grab a picture of desert! But anywho. We had so much fun. I told Andrew we didn't fit in because one family has a toddler, one has a newborn, and one is expecting. But hey! I like to stand out (wink).
We had a blast having dinner and watching The Grinch. Then the grownups decided to play the Wii which was so fun! We haven't played in way too long!

I was bored a few days before Christmas so I decided to test my hand at drawing. I'm not the artsy type but  I had lots of fun!

And Christmas is here!! I love Christmas! I had to work Christmas eve and Christmas night so I spent too much time sleeping but it was still tons of fun!

I have awesome coworkers who like to make the best of having to work.

Katie and Julie both loved the toys they got.

Julie had destroyed hers in about 20 minutes flat.

Even Kassie was feeling the Christmas spirit! She loved and Julie for a while!

Andrew spoiled me this year! He is so good to me I don't know how I got to be so lucky!
Merry Christmas everyone!

Tis The Season

Can you believe it's already December?! Oh my goodness this year has gone by oh so quickly. But I am definitely excited for Christmas to be here! Christmas is my most favoritest holiday ever. And it has definitely hit the Higham house.

Don't you just love those stockings? Those were my great find last year!

Like I said, Christmas has officially arrived. I am even completely done with my Christmas shopping AND it's all wrapped and ready to be delivered!

My mom and I got into the holiday spirit by making two crafts!

The first thing we made was this sign.

Cute, huh? It was really easy. We just got the boards cut at Home Depot and then used stencils to paint it on. We got the stencils at Michael's but I think JoAnne's or even Walmart would have something similar.

We also made wreaths. I don't have any pictures of hers but I made a Santa Clause wreath.

I can't remember where I got this idea from but if anyone knows of the link let me know.

Happy Holidays!!!
